Windows 7 system won't start (blue screen error)

$

Hi all,

I'm facing a serious issue with my system - it won't load windows and hits a blue screen error (See attached) every time I load.

I suspect it's a hardware issue because I've had symptoms for a while. Below I'll describe symptoms and what led to the issue, and what actions I've taken so far.

Symptoms

  • when playing some performance intensive video games, computer freezes or video driver crashes (crashing the game)
  • I have 12 GB of RAM in the system but when it was working it only detected 6GB of workable RAM
  • Every so often it would face issues when booting (would freeze during windows booting up). After several restarts it would be fine
  • The last couple of months it's been fine, only crashing a couple of times but otherwise no issues

What led to these issues

  • I decided to try and get the system to use its full 12gb (after only detecting 6gb). I did this by going to msconfig -> tools -> advanced -> 'maximum memory' set to 12
  • I've done this before and it's worked. For a while the system detects 12 gb of RAM, but eventually it goes back to 6GB

Steps taken so far

  • Boot in safe mode
  • system restore from last save point (a few days ago)
  • Removed each RAM module in turn to see if it was one of these (it wasn't, issue occurred on all configurations)

None of these worked.

If anyone could help me identify the issue, it'd be great. The decision I need to make is basically do I try to repair this computer or get a new one (current system is 5 or 6 years old so degradation is expected)

thanks a lot for your help

Rich

    Problem with new desktops

    Dear Dell Customer Service Team,

We recently bought 2 units of Dell OptiPlex 3040 Microtower PC. Since day1, we had so many problems with these 2 computers. The PC doesn't even start and it took about 20 to 30mins easily.

We upgraded the windows version and then tried. But no good results. We lodged a complaint to our supplier and we followed up for 2 months. Our supplier informed us that DELL is unable to settle the issue.

Despite so many follow ups, we called customer service and a ticket was created. The engineer we spoke to didn't even understand our issue and asking us why don't we use laptop instead of desktop. We were wondering how he can suggest us to change. it is our own company and we have decided to buy a desktop. We called only to complaint and get a solution.

Finally they gave a website to download the bios and we managed to install. Then only the PC was ok.

Our question is why in the first place it didn't work as both were new units.

Second, the engineers and support personnel were totally lacking of knowledge. They should have told us and should have guided us in the first place instead of making us wait for few months.

We stopped buying DELL products since 2006. It was due to an incident, that the parts delivered were not genuine. Due to this incident, we stopped purchasing DELL products 10years ago.

Unfortunately after 10 years, we decided to buy but it is again a bad decision. We are a reputable MNC and my management was totally upset with this incident.

Hence we are officially launching a complaint against DELL and we will not buy or recommend DELL products in future.

    Virus Phone Call Scam

The scam reported in the 2012 forum is still going on. I get 4-5 phone calls per week telling me to go to Event Viewer and look at stuff and then type in a random URL into my Run box. The first time I started to follow their directions, and, realizing this was a scam, I reset my computer. But it's been happening ever since.

In addition to my name, number, personal info, Dell service tag, express service code, and purchase date, this guy could also tell me MY COMPLAINT HISTORY. He could tell me about the issues I'd had when I had specifically called Dell in the past.

This is ridiculous. The calls come from lots of different numbers from all different locations. Worse, they often now come from a hidden Private number!

I was already excessively disappointed in Dell's customer service as they've repeatedly failed to address my computer's issue, and then for the past 9+ months I've been receiving these scam calls.

Needless to say, I don't see any purchases from Dell in my future. In fact, I'll enjoy telling every person I can how awful my experience has been.

    Hello,

My 2710 went dark after switching SATA MODE in BIOS.  I tried every tip listed here but still can't get to the BIOS, I think my mobo is bricked so, I need to find a reasonably priced replacement.  Dell wants $550, any other alternative around for around $200?

    Thanks.

My Dell Inspiron 580 has begun turning itself off after the hard drive enters sleep mode.  When I press the power button to turn it back on, nothing happens.  I turn off the electricity to it & my router, turn it back on, press the power button, move the mouse.  Eventually, thus far, the computer powers up.  I tried not letting the hard drive enter sleep mode & I shut down the computer myself.  I still could not turn the computer back on by pressing its power button without repeatedly turning off the power strip, moving the mouse or pressing a key & pressing the power button.  I've checked my software & haven't found any that is set to turn off the computer when it is done running.  I installed Windows 10 over Windows 7 last August.  I am afraid to shut down the computer, because I may not be able to turn it on again.  Since the computer is 6 1/2 years old, I am in the process of buying a new one.

It had the hard drive to boot listed 4th so i moved it to 1st..saved reboot same thing. Double checked my hard drive wires were plugged in 3rd try ..same results. Did a ePSA check and got an error code 2000-0142 as hard drive 0...like it's not finding it? I'll post pics to assist and any help is appreciated!

Prior to sticking the couple thousand dollar paper weight in the closet...it would give the beep codes during start up and never get to the desk top screen...i did a few hard reset bios with swaping the clips on the pins / changed MB battery ect and it would sometimes fire up and be playable until it got shut off from power outage or an update ect and during boot up it was always the problem with loading bios. I got that to last for a few months...until finally nothing helped it load the bios.

    DELL E521 - diagnostic lights stuck at 2 & 4..?

I have a Dell E521 desktop, which I've had for nine years and one day I suddenly discovered the front power button was flashing an amber light and then over time the power gradually died completely. I then looked online to confirm it was the power supply at fault and so went on ebay and bought a new power supply the exact same as the original.

The problem I have now is that everything powers up fine with a front green power light, but it is now showing green diagnostic lights on the front panel which are clearly 2 & 4. I've looked in the manual and it says, 'a possible graphic-card failure has occurred'. I've tried taking my Radeon HD6450 graphic card out and reinstalled it and I've also tried booting with just the integrated graphics on the motherboard, but the lights remain stuck at 2 & 4 and the computer will not boot up properly. Only the Dell logo screen appears on my monitor and the bar underneath that fills white as it boots is only three quarters of the way white. It's really frustrating to be greeted with yet another problem which I don't think is the graphic card, because how can both go down at the same time?

On the motherboard there is an LED that's showing an amber/orange light, it used to always be green, so what does this orange light mean? Can anyone please help me diagnose what the problem could be and a possible fix. I really like my Dell E521 and really would like to get it up and running again. Hope you can help. Thanks.

Inspiron 7459 Crashes In Sleep Mode

    Hi Everybody,

I have a brand new Inspiron 24 7000 Series (Model 7459) with Windows 10. After an hour or so in sleep mode, the computer crashes.

Also, if I put it in sleep mode and awaken it in a few minutes, the computer comes back with the spacebar key stuck (the cursor flies across Notepad) and when I try to click the Windows start icon, it only opens the Cortana menu. After a few minutes this behavior stops and every functions normally.

    Any ideas?

    Dear sirs

i AM READY “now” TO BUY A windows 7 Pro XPS on sale?  The last one I bought was ABOUT 16 month ago and it as an XPS 8700.  IT HAS BEEN FIELD TESTED BY MY 13/14 YEAR gRANDSON AND HAS PERFORMED FLAWLESSLY.

IF YOU HAVE ANY OF THE OF THESE UNITS ON CLEARANCE, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.  You originally quoted me one of these units at $814 on the 11th of July. You also said that you had some leeway in being able to lower that price.. I'm ready to buy one today if you could lower the quote to $775 inclusive of Tax.

Failed BIOS update - Dell XPS 8500

I went to the Dell product page for my computer - Dell XPS 8500, and ran the scan to check for updates.  3 updates, one of them for BIOS.  I ran the updates and initiated the BIOS update.  Midway through it appeared to get hung up and my machine froze.  I left it for an hour, came back and still no luck.

So I rebooted the machine and of course now it won't boot up.  I have power and can hear the fan, but no lights on the box and no screen input.

Looking though the manual and on this forum, I've tried resetting the BIOS jumpers, and removing the CMOS battery.  When I rebooted I saw lights on the box this time but it shut down after 30 seconds, and now back to the same problem.

From what I read on this forum I'm SOL unless I buy a new motherboard.

Just thought I'd check if anyone had any other suggestions.  If not, where can I get  a new motherboard for this?  The product page for my model doesn't list it as an option...

    Thanks for your help!

Dell PSU H180NS-00 replacement in Europe

The PSU in my Dell Inspiron 3656 Desktop AMD FX-8800P went up in smoke when I plugged in the PSU cable - forgot to switch the 110V/230V switch, my bad.

It was ordered from the US since somehow Dell don't sell this product in Europe. And this causes me major headaches. None of the distributors in my country are able to offer me any help - since this model is not available in Europe, they cannot offer any replacement part. Crazy.

Is there a solution for this kind of issue?

I recently had to do the hand-me-down thing with my wife's Dell, with the old Dell going to my daughter.  My daughter's machine is now insisting that the Win7 installation is invalid.
