New Dell Bios rendered XPS desktop unusable

0

Went from 2.1.10 to 2.2.1 and all went well said completed successfully but nope.  Computer now refuses to advance any further than the "Starting Windows" screen .

System is unusable now and warranty ran out 5 days ago . Support said i need to pay $283.00 for one year , are they out of their minds ?

It's their Bios update that they listed as urgent for my XPS 8900 that made it unusable .

Inspiron 5675 - Random Lockups - looking for guidance

I recently purchased a Inspiron 5675 (A10-9700, 8GB, Radeon RX 560, 7200rpm 1TB drive).    I have been having random lockups (system freezes, mouse\keyboard unresponsive, after few seconds monitor blacks out.) Only option is to power off and power on system, at which point Windows recognizes a crash and attempts a repair.  I can perform or skip the repair and bring it back online.  Windows event logs only show the restart. No notable events leading to the lockup.  These are occurring anywhere between 3 and 12 hours apart, at random

Lockups have occurred: During windows updates, when the system is idle (day/night), while installing Steam client.

Things I have tried:  Full Factory reset, Updating Bios to 1.3.6, Installing Windows 10 Fall Creators Update and all patches, updating AMD Radeon Drivers. Verifying all other drivers are up to date. Verified that the USB Wake Option is enabled in Bios, Turned off system sleep in Windows10.

Online, and Pre-boot diagnostics all come back green.

I thought it may be heat as there are only 2 small 92mm fans (heatsink, rear case).  The system is in a well ventilated, cool location.  Temp logging shows cpu temps between 28c and 50c.  The last registered temp before the last lockup showed 32c.

Has anyone else had similar issues?  Am I missing a troubleshooting step?  Is it time to give up and call into support?

XPS 8930 Bios Update Failure

I currently have bios version 1.0.2 installed on my XPS 8930.  There is a new version 1.0.5 that I've tried to install twice.  I close all programs and then run the new bios install as an administrator.  The installer shows XPS8930_1.0.5 Start to flash . . . Press OK to continue or CANCEL to quit.  I press OK and then the screen displays:  Dell Computer Flash BIOS upgrade, System Revision: 1.0.2, Rom File Revision: 1.0.5, Loading BIOS binary file data . . . , followed by a the same message with the word . . . done.  The PC then looks like it is going to reboot, the power light flashes and the PC shuts down.  If I press the power button, nothing happens, even if I hold it in for a while.  If I shut down power to the PC, then it starts up fine, but still has the old bios version: 1.0.2.

Is this a bad bios update file or am I doing something wrong?  I've deleted the file twice, downloaded it using both IE and Firefox, cleaned up my drive, etc.

Inspiron 620 BIOS update problem

I just tried to update the BIOS from A03 to the latest A10. I'm running Windows 10 Home, Vers. 1709., with all updates installed. Everything about the BIOS update seemed to go well. Got a message that the update was successful but needed a restart to take effect. I hit the Restart Now option, Seemed to restart normally, but it hung when it started loading windows. Here's where it hung:

I let it run like this for 30 minutes or so, then shut it down by holding in the power button. I then tried to start it again. I noticed during startup that I got the Dell screen (I think maybe it's called the POST screen) where I can specify the boot source. I let it continue til it hung again (same spot). I shut it down again and found my Repair Disk, restarted and hit F12 during the Dell screen, selected DVD drive, and hit a key to continue. Windows hung again, similar to before, but this time it had an automatic repair message (which got my hopes up). Here's the Auto Repair message:

Well, no luck. I let it run like this for a half hour or so, then shut it down, Next I found a USB Recovery stick, stuck it in, selected USB Disk during the Dell screen. This time it hung again at the same place. No mention of Automatic Repair. Shut it down again. Then I tried starting again, but hit F2 during the Dell screen to go to Setup. It went to Setup normally. Here's what it looked like:

The heading shows that the BIOS was updated to A10. I went through all the setup screens. Nothing appeared abnormal or unusual to me. I was glad to see that the A10 appeared to have installed, and that the system date and time were correct, but disappointed it still wouldn't load windows. I exited BIOS without saving. It hung in the same spot. I turned it off, and posted this.

Would appreciate any suggestions on how I might get windows to load using either the Repair Disk or the USB Recovery stick, or any other trick to get to the Recovery options. Thanks.

I have a Dell Inspiron 20 3052. After I downloaded update computer said it was restarting, but it won't reboot. The orange light is on. I've tried shutting it off by pressing it for 30 seconds or so, but computer still won't start. Screen is black.

Thanks,

Randy

Inspiron 5675 - will Mobo fit in a non dell case?

I would like to replace the Case that the system came in in order to allow for more fans to be installed (120-140 mm) and promote better airflow in the case.  I would  like to have some beeter cable management as well since the case is simply too small now that I upgraded the PSU (EVGA 650W semi modular) and the vid card (Asus ROG 1080 ti) and all the cables are cramped.

so in short, is it possible to find a case (Dell or otherwise) that would fit the mobo from this PC properly?

BIOS Update 2.2.1 on XPS 8900

(I accidentally posted this same thing in the 'Laptop' discussion section. I hope a moderator can remove the previous post)

I installed the latest BIOS update today (2.2.1) and noticed that when installing Windows 7 my screen flashes oddly right before the Starting Windows logo comes swirling in. Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience with this update. It doesn't happen with Windows 10.

For what it's worth, I occasionally tinker with Windows 7, although I use 10 most of the time. I have 10 backed up with Macrium Reflect (which I re-install from a Macrium Windows PE disk in a matter of minutes), and I use this image of 7 on a usb stick.

XPS 8700 HDD SSD Cache reports multiple errors

It appears I need to replace the 32GB SSD in my computer, as the Intel RST reports multiple repeat failures in the drive. I purchased a replacement SSD, but when I installed it, the system failed to find a boot drive, so obviously I'm missing something. Can someone please list the steps to replacing the SSD? Apparently the SSD has a role in the boot process. Or I'm just overlooking a step (or two).

Thank you,

Peter Morris

Microsoft to issue emergency Windows update for processor security bugs

Microsoft is issuing a rare out-of-band security update to supported versions of Windows today. The software update is part of a number of fixes that will protect against a newly-discovered processor bug in Intel, AMD, and ARM chipsets.

The company will issue a Windows update that will be automatically applied to Windows 10 machines at 5PM ET / 2PM PT today.

The update will also be available for older and supported versions of Windows today, but systems running operating systems like Windows 7 or Windows 8 won’t automatically be updated through Windows Update until next Tuesday.

HDD maximum size -XPS 8700 - inconsistent answers

Hi guys

I'm getting inconsistent answers on the internet to a simple question, and I would value an understandable answer please.

I have an mid 2013 XPS8700 using a 256Gb SSD for the C drive, and a 2Tb HDD for the D drive. (Original equipment).  It is using BIOS A11 and I am running Windows 10 Pro.

I wish to replace the Seagate 2Tb drive (which has worked very well) with a larger drive.

Some sources say that each SATA drive can be a maximum of 3Tb, but  other users state they are using a 4 or 5 Tb drive with no issues.

So, can someone please give me a definate answer.  If the answer is over 4Tb could someone explain why this works even though it is exceeding the Dell maximum size of 3Tb.

Is this because there is another aspect involved - like PSU issues?
Ideally I would like to go for a 6Tb but 4Tb would do, however I dont wish to cause issues later.
I probably would go for WD Black or Seagate BarraCuda Pro unless I get adverse feedback.

I would really appreciate sopme help. I am now out of capacity.

Thanks in advance

Dell Optiplex 7050 Connects with three monitors - got unable save display settings issue

Dell Optiplex 7050 Connects with three monitors. Those monitors are the same model (Dell 19 inches).

Dell Optiplex 7050 has three ports (VGA, Displayport, HDMI) for connecting monitors.

Monitor 1 :  VGA - VGA

Monitor 2 : Displayport - Displayport

Monitor 3 : VGA - VGA - VGA to HDMI

Three monitors are working fine with extended mode.

But when I tried to duplicate two of monitors, it will pop up unable save display settings message.

Does anyone know why and how to fix this issue? Thank you!

Any ideas?

Inspiron 3043 AIO Seems to have Died

We have two Inspiron 3043 All in One computers, and one seems to have stopped working, though we are at a loss as to why. It looks almost like there is something wrong with the power jack itself.

We swapped the power supplies between the two 3043's we have, and the working 3043 works with both power supplies, and the dead 3043 one works with neither power supply. The strange thing is that when we plug in the power adapter, the light on it goes out the second it is plugged in, which would seem to indicate some type of short internally.

Has anyone else noticed this type of behavior? We were going to get another power supply, but after swapping them, it doesn't seem like that would work.

XPS 8920 won't wake up from sleep by touching keyboard or trackball

I tried all the settings; ( hibernation, hybrid sleep, sleep, etc.) in the power settings area to no avail. My "old" xps 8500 always woke up by touching any key but I can't get the new xps 8920 to do it after a week of trying.
