How does one get support/help for a machine with no service tag?
Some time back, I picked up a scrap Dell Studio 1558 from a friend's repair shop. The original owner had decided to scrap the machine when he found out the cost to repair the machine was almost half the original cost of purchase, and that newer models sold in stores was equal to or less than what this one was going to cost to repair.
I gave my friend a few bucks for it, ordered the replacement system board and hard drive myself, and did the repairs myself. The system has been working fine until recently. Now I am having OS issues, and the reinstallation disk that came with the machine, (stuck in the drive at the time I received it) does not seem to work anymore, ( get some install failure error during the second part of the install). Is there any way of ordering replacement disks from Dell even though the machine does not have a service tag via system board?
I have tried using a Windows 7 Home disk to do a clean install,,, but half the Dell drivers from Dell Support will not install using this copy where they did with the original Reinstallation disk.
