After working fine for 2 years, my XPS 8300 (July 2011, refurb dell outlet) will suddenly not recognize the ATI Radeon HD 5770, which was my primary display adapter. I do remember it always being tricky to get it running as the only adapter, but nothing I do now will work.
The motherboard seems only to see the onboard video chip, and gives no options to disable it in the BIOS boot up. The 5770 fan runs fine and on power up it still triggers my HDTV and LCD inputs as though a device is present, (DVI and HDMI) but there is never any signal.
I have seen dozens of confusing threads saying the video card vendors' drivers changed the VBIOS to one that Dell refuses to support. But if my PC now cannot see the PCI card, I have no way to access the video card to roll it back (even if that would fix it). I believe I'm using the latest BIOS from Dell.
Is there any path forward, either with a Dell bios update or downgrade? Are there any suggested 8300-compatible replacements for the HD 5770 I could get for under $200?
Thanks!
