The sound is gone on my Dell (Driver is gone )no Multimedia Audio Controller

I had the sound go out on my computer a few days ago. It was working and went out. IN the device manager it has next to Multimedia audio controller a question mark. My original sound device was a "Realtek AC'97 Driver". I have tried to download it several time and come up with the same problem ven when in safe mode. I get a blue screen and stop: 0x0000007E error.  I have been trying to download the Realtek AC 97 Audio driver in safe mode, and it if fine untill I restart then I get a blue screen. How can I ever get my sound back. I don't understand why and XP driver for sound would cause this problem. Can someone please tell me audio driver I can use instead of Realteck? I have don't everything to try to correct the problem, I would like to fix the Bios but cannot find the fixer for this computer model.

I have a Dell Celeron 512 MB of Ram

 with Microsoft Windows XP.
