Recovery: your PC couldn't turn off properly

Help!!!

My Dell Inspiron xps 8500 stopped working today.  This was completely out of the blue but within two hours I got the blue screen of death at least three times.  I ran pretty much every system analysis I had and everything came up fine.  I ran a full virus scan and there was nothing detected.  However, the computer kept restarting so I figured I would check the drivers and make sure everything was up-to-date.  I downloaded a few optional drivers (such as my AMD video card) and when the system went to restart, it read "35% installed" and then... bsod!

I have been trying to start it all night with no luck.  I get the message:

RECOVERY

Your PC COULDN"T TURN OFF PROPERLY and needs to be repaired.

Error code:  0xc0000001

You need to use the recovery tools on your installation media...

So here is the thing, I don't have any installation media as the system didn't come with any.  My warranty expired last year so I don't have that to fall back on either.  There is no option to "repair" from the system itself.  I am really at a loss for what to do.  Does anyone have any ideas?  Also is there any way to get an installation disk after the fact?

I would be grateful if someone could get back to me.  I must confess I am not a computer expert and my skills in the field are pretty limited.  This is our family cpu so I really need to get it working.  If I have to I guess I will take it to Geek Squad but they are very expensive.

Thank you!
