XPS 8300: replacing wireless minicard with new PCI-Express wireless card

I have a Dell XPS 8300 desktop, purchased in 2011.  I am experiencing poor wireless performance;  data rate is not great and it frequently disconnects from my wireless network.  Also I would like to upgrade the card to the current wireless standards.  Need a bit of advice on how to swap out the hardware.

Existing wireless card is in the mini-card slot (PCIE Minicard) on the motherboard. There is an internal antenna inside the case.  It is near the top of the case, but inside the case, so it would seem likely that a better setup would be to switch to a new PCI-Express card, with an external antenna.

I understand how to remove the and install cards as necessary.  What I need advice on is:

--if I install a new wireless card in the available PCI-Express slot (not the minicard) do I need to first remove the minicard?

--do I need to change anything in the setup to make the machine recognize the new PCI-express card?

--any other considerations?

Thanks!
