Inspiron 537s - must I now buy an external DVD drive?

Hello,

We upgraded this Inspiron 537s desktop to windows 10. It went flawlessly and works great BUT, the DVD drive is no longer recognized or found anywhere within windows 10 [neither in "My Computer" nor in device manager]. It does however show up in the BIOS. The drive is a Hitachi HL GH50N. It worked perfectly with before the upgrade from Windows 7.

Weeks will become months soon and we have tried everything we can find. This includes the registry change from Microsoft [in EnumDevice1, modify, type 1 in the value data box]. Made no difference. Went to Dell and downloaded the firmware update for this GH50N drive multiple times [5] but the file will never open nor go into run mode using any & all programs in this PC. The only one that tries to open it is Windows picture viewer, but it just sits in the loading mode forever. We've also disconnected the wiring from the drive, rebooted then plugged it back in. Didn't help of course. We can hear the drive spin up and run just fine.

So after all of this, might it be simpler for us to buy an inexpensive external usb DVD drive so we can spin an occasional program disc when we must? We're gettin' weary [:-(

Many thanks for any help you can be. T'care.

Mike & Linda
