External eSATA port on Studio XPS 9100 not working

Hello All,

I have a Dell Studio XPS 9100, and the external eSATA port is not working or it isn't being detected. I have a Seagate FreeAgent external drive, and it does not get detected, and it does NOT power up when I plug it into the eSATA port. The FreeAgent drive works fine as it is detected via the eSATA port on my Dell Studio XPS 1645 laptop. The drive is detected on the 9100 when I use the drive's USB cable (plugged into a USB port of course).

I have tried doing research online, and some suggestions have been to enable the eSATA port via the BIOS, but The eSATA port is enabled in the BIOS. Is the wrong driver installed on the unit? I see the Intel(R) ICH10 Family 6 Port SATA AHCI Controller -3A22 in device manager. Is that the correct driver needed to recognize the external eSATA port or is there something else that is wrong with the 9100?

Does anyone think that the external eSATA port requires an external drive with it's own power source? The 9100 is a mid year 2010 model, but I would think that it shouldn't require a drive with an external power source.

Thanks in advance for your help!
