Can someone answer this simple question please?

What is the little white light on the front of the computer, next (left of) the power button for? I notice it's "busy" a lot, even when I don't think it should be. My computer seems to get bogged down a LOT because something seems to be running in the background. This happens even when I have nothing really going on other than checking some mail or something. In other words, I don't have other programs running etc. (at least that I know of) It drives me nuts because as I said it bogs everything down and sometimes even interrupts downloads...

I assume the light being on solid, or flickering, means it's "busy"...but doing what I wonder. The only thing I can think of is that my anti-virus stuff is running in the background. (Norton) But when I look at tasks it seems to be doing nothing. Anyway, most people know a LOT more about computers than I do, and my curiosity about that little white light (again, NOT the power button light) has gotten the best of me. I had to ask! Thanks in advance I suspect it has something to do with Norton, but what do I know? (not a heck of a lot!)
