Optiplex 3040 cctk BIOS settings WoL

$

Recently deployed xx number of OP3040 machines. Obviously WoL is a must. Default BIOS setup does not have it enabled, but using cctk from Dell Client Command Suite makes it easy during SCCM deployment (Win 7 x64)

So I have exported .exe with all required WoL settings (inc deepsleep DISABLE) and BIOS system password set.

Exe runs fine in Task Sequence, all settings get applied, but NOT activated.

At this point I can power off Windows, restart, power off again, WoL is NOT active (yet the deepsleep is definitely set to disable)

All I needed to do on EACH machine:

F2 get to BIOS

type password

exit

I did NOTapply anything, I did not make any other changes (just in & out)

Instantly WoL started working correctly

Surely that is a but in either cctk and/or latest BIOS for OP 3040?

Anybody else noticed?

Seb

Inspiron 20 3043 Bios update

Dear all,

I have here an Inspiron 20 3043 unit with an old A03 bios. I am trying to update it to the current latest A12 version, using the Dell official executable file for Windows. The Windows part goes all right, then it reboots (in fact it does not, as this unit never reboots - I believe because of the old Bios - it shuts down), so I have to wait until it shuts down, then I start it by pressing the power button, and then the InsydeH2O Secure Flash update shows up, but it says "Error : Decompress failed". Then my only choice is to press a key to reboot (again, it shuts down, currently being incapable of rebooting).

I have tried to use the A04 Bios file, that's the same issue.

My Bios files are located in Windows under My Document.

I have tried to unzip and then uncompress the BIN file to get an .fd file for the Bios, put it on a FAT32 usb stick, and then boot using WIN+B, but all I get is the diagnostic app from Dell.

Any idea on how I can get this Bios updated?

BIOS does not load

My XPS 2710 unit had problem with HDD so last night computer scanned and tried to repair the HDD (took about 10 hours). After that I managed to start windows 10, it worked for just enough time to back up some files. Later computer freeze again. So I switch off by holding power button. After that I changed BIOS settings from UEFI to Legacy (I know I should have not done it) but now my computer does not even load BIOS. I have disconnected power, removed CMOS battery (for 20 minutes) as in accordance with some instructions that should have reset BIOS to default settings. But the problem still exists. When I switch on the computer, nothing happens, only back screen and the fan sound. I have tried to hold or press in quick succession F2 and F9 keys but response.By the way, blue screen error that I remember was WDF_violation if that is any help.

Any help or advice would be welcome. Thank in advance.

Could someone help me with the organisation structure at Dell Support India? I am guessing there are going to be levels of customer support, starting with a base team then an escalation team, right? Who do you write to if you are not satisfied with the DELL customer care Team?

Hello, I currently have an Optiplex 9020 SFF. Is it possible for me to take the current processor (Core i7 4770) and change it to, say, Core i3 4130 or Core i5 4460 - 4670k? I Know the socket is LGA 1150, however I'm afraid it might somehow not support some CPU....

Just purchased a xps8500 I7-3770 W/  video card,hd7870,Win7pro  64 bit , 2tb/256HD,  presently it has 12gb of ram (2x4gb) and (2x2gb)  DDR3 PC3-12800 (1600mhz) in it .  I want  to max out the ram to 32gb (4x8gb) @ 1600mhz.    Need to know what 8gb/dimm moduels are compatable . All the ones I've seen are xmp enhanced  and  I dont have enough knowledge about compatibiity or if they will work . Is the motherboard on the xps 8500  xmp compatable. Does the bios on the xps 8500 have provisions for setting this type of memory (DDr3 PC3-12800 ) (XMP enhanced ) Dell is of no help they dont even offer memory 8gb/sticks for this new computer only 4gb/sticks which are not xmp type. However they do claim it is capable of 32gb max.  hopefull sombody has already completed this upgrade and can tell me what specific type ,style, and speed  they used to do this         thanks Mac

I have just set up my new All in One PC:  XPS 2720.  It has an NVidia GeForce GT  750M graphics card.  So why is Support Assist asking me to install the Intel HD Graphics driver?  Would installing this not disable my Nvida graphics card?

If you use GoToMyPC and use the same username and password on other sites, hackers may have stolen your log-in info from one of those other sites and been able to log into GoToMyPC. There's no apparent indication that GoToMyPC has been hacked directly.

You should get a mandatory password reset notice at GoToMyPC next time you log in. So log in now and change your password.

And stop using the same username and password on multiple sites. [;)]

Recover Corrupted BIOS Firmware

$

I have a DELL 660s which no longer boots after a failed windows 10 install.  Unfortunately, it's just a few months out of warranty. [:(]

When I power the computer on the fan starts and I see a brief period of hard drive activity but the screen doesn't activate - just a blank, black screen.  I don't even see the DELL logo and I'm unable to access BIOS.

I believe the BIOS firmware was corrupted by the failed Windows 10 install.  I've tried removing the CMOS battery overnight but this didn't help.  At this point I believe I need to flash stable firmware onto the BIOS chip, which is all the more difficult since the computer won't boot and I can't access BIOS.

Based on my research manufacturers of BIOS chips often include emergency recovery procedures to fix corrupted BIOS firmware.  For example the manufactuer AMI includes an embedded "boot block" which can sometimes be used to boot from floppy / flash usb and install new firmware even when the existing BIOS firmware is corrupted.  See: https://techjourney.net/recover-or-undo-corrupt-ami-bios-flash-update/

I'd like to try something like this but I don't know where to start. I guess the first thing I need to know is who is the manufacturer of the BIOS chip in my DELL 660s computer? Can anyone help me answer this question?

I found one vague reference on google that mentions AMI is the manufacturer but I'm not sure if the source is accurate.

Thanks for the help.

EDIT: I feel like what I need to do is run the following command to extract the BIOS ROM file which needs to be flashed to my PC:

"Inspiron 660s Vostro 270s A11 BIOS.exe" /writeromfile

However this is not working.  Apparently DELL discontinued support for the /writeromfile flag in newer versions of their BIOS executable files.

So I'm feeling like I'm completely out of luck!  I don't know  where to turn, it seems like the only option left is replacing the entire motherboard which is just depressing.

Does my Dell Inspiron 3847 do a boot time check.

Perhaps once a month I have noticed that my Dell performs rather oddly at bootup.

The Dell Logo appears, then I hear the disc drive make some unusual noises followed by a period of a minute or so whilst the disc drive light remains on. It looks like it is actually doing something rather than stuck on.

The finally Windows starts up.

What is it, does anyone know, its being doing it ever since I have had the computer.

Is it performing a preboot system or hardware or maintaince checkup on a monthly basis, if so can I program it for when it starts.

Thanks .. Bill

Optiplex 3040 SFF USB and HDMI problems - can anybody confirm these?

$

Hi, I bought an optiplex 3040 Small form factor machine running win7 initially but I restored windows 10 on it. i've had it only 2 days now, but I have detected two problems alarming - I'm trying to find information on whether they are common problems with this model or I have a faulty unit:

1) I have a USB2.0 3.5" HDD dock (with its own power supply) that when connected on any USB port and whaving any HD docked, after a couple minutes will start disconnecting and reconnecting in rapid succession. On other computers the dock is running rock solid stable. I'd worry that it might be my particular 3040, but I've read that Windows 8.1/10 has this issue. The event viewer doesn't show anything abnormal, other than a warning with ID 51: An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\DRx during a paging operation.

Anybody who could comment on that?

2) I realized that if I try re-connecting the HDMI plug while the machine is on (eg disconnect it and then reconnect it), it will cause the system to instantly reboot - this is reproducible inside windows, inside the bios or while memtest86 is running (booting from a USB thumb). I'm driving a VGA monitor with a small belkin VGA-to-HDMI adapter, and the problem will appear even if the VGA cable is not connected at the other end of the adapter.

My guess is that the HDMI plug when inserted short-circuits the machine. While this is not a huge problem (I could make sure to shutdown the computer before unplugin/plugging in a monitor) it makes me wonder if my machine is faulty and I should have it replaced/fixed, or if this is a fault with all optiplex 3040 SFF units.

Your personal experience and feedback regarding these issues would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

XPS 8900 - Dual GPU - Is it possible?

$

I noticed that there are 2 PCIE slots on the motherboard of the XPS 8900. Would it be possible to run 2 GPU's by putting a second GPU in the slot? I know AMD has Bridgeless Crossfire but would that work? I was debating getting the R9 370 and then just adding another R9 370 down the road...

As for Power, I was going to upgrade to a 750w PSU as well when I added the second GPU.
